Self-Care is Difficult… but it’s Important
“You need to take care of yourself!” is a phrase I’ve heard many times in the struggles of trying to navigate my life, it sounds good in theory but is more difficult in practice. Maybe you’ve heard this phrase too and thought to yourself “I don’t have time for self-care.” If you have had these thoughts, you are in the right place.
Taking care of yourself is essential to your mental health.
I’m a full-time Mental Health Counselor and one of the questions I often ask my clients is “When is the last time you did something for you?” Many of them can’t remember, or they have said they don’t have time. I’m guilty of this too, I remember thinking the same thing when I was trying to tackle graduate school and balance work, school, internship, a social life, and still have time to sleep. I was sick of my professors drilling self-care into our heads when I felt as if I was running a marathon and if I stopped and took a breath I would just get further behind. Little did I know at the time is that my professors had insight that I lacked. My professors were trying to teach me a crucial skill for those in the helping professions.
Taking care of myself is essential to being able to serve others to the best of my ability.
